RC Safety & Liability

RC Crash Crew · updated Jul 4, 2026

RC is awesome. It also involves fire, speed, water, aircraft, and sharp spinning things. Read this — organized by what you actually run.

LiPo batteries (all disciplines). Can catch fire if over-charged, punctured, or charged unattended. Always charge on a non-flammable surface, use a proper balance charger, never leave charging batteries alone, and store or dispose of damaged/puffed packs safely — never in household trash. See our pinned LiPo guides.

Cars, trucks & crawlers. High-speed and nitro/gas-powered models can reach 60+ mph and cause real injury on impact. Keep spectators, pets, and traffic well clear of the run line. Nitro and gas engines run hot exhaust and open flame during starting — never refuel a running or hot engine, and store fuel away from heat and sparks.

Aircraft & giant-scale planes. Subject to FAA rules in the US (and equivalents elsewhere) — registration, line-of-sight, altitude, and airspace limits, especially near airports. Giant-scale gas/glow planes carry real propeller and fuel hazards — a spinning prop can cause severe injury, so keep hands and faces clear before and during starting.

FPV & drones. Never fly beyond visual line of sight without following your country's rules for it. Prop guards and crash-stop settings matter — even a small quad's propeller can cut skin at speed. Respect no-fly zones (airports, crowds, private property) and altitude limits.

Boats. Mean water access and drowning/retrieval hazards — never run alone in deep, cold, or fast-moving water, and never wade in to retrieve a boat in conditions you wouldn't swim in yourself. Life jackets for anyone near the water's edge, especially kids.

Where you run matters. Many great bash spots are on private or public land where RC may not be allowed. A pin on our map is not permission. Do not trespass. Confirm the spot is legal and open before you run, and respect posted rules, other people, and wildlife.

Kids & spectators. RC is a great family hobby, but keep young kids and pets back from the run line, chargers, and starting motors or engines — a fast truck or a spinning propeller doesn't know the difference between an adult and a toddler.

Tools & building. Soldering irons, hobby knives, and CA glue/accelerator are part of the build side of this hobby — ventilate your workspace, keep irons in a stand when not in use, and keep blades and chemicals away from kids.

Events & race nights. Follow the event organizer's safety briefing and course marshaling — it exists because someone got hurt before you got there.

Community-submitted places are not guaranteed legal or safe. Run smart.
