After a Wet, Muddy or Snowy Run: Stopping the Damage That Happens Later

Water does most of its damage in the days after the run, not during it. Ten minutes on the night — in this order — is what decides whether the bearings survive.

Water does its damage in the days after the run, not during it. The car comes home working, sits in a bag, and a week later the bearings are rough, a screw has seized, and a connector has gone green.

Ten minutes on the night matters more than anything you do later. This is the wet-run recovery: water, mud, wet grass and snow.

Do this immediately, at the car

1. Kill the power and unplug the battery.

Do this before anything else. Running a wet car to "dry it out" is actively harmful — it spins water deeper into the bearings, the motor and the diffs, exactly where you least want it.

Check the battery connector for water while it is out.

Then, at the bench

2. If it was salt water — rinse first, immediately

This overrides everything below and it cannot wait.

Fresh water does its damage while it is present. Salt keeps corroding long after everything looks and feels dry, because the salt crystals remain and pull moisture back out of the air.

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water, immediately. The rinse is the entire treatment; skipping it is what destroys the model. The same applies to a lesser degree to winter road salt and to brackish water.

3. Get the standing water out

Compressed air or a leaf blower. Work through the chassis, the wheels, around the suspension, the motor, and the electronics area. You are chasing out water sitting in pockets and around seams.

Avoid blasting a pressure washer directly at bearings, the motor, or electronics seams — that drives water past seals that would have kept out ordinary splashing.

4. Wash grit off before it dries

If the run was muddy, the grit matters as much as the water.

Dried grit in a hinge pin, a bearing or a shock shaft is abrasive forever. Get it off while it is still soft. A soft brush and water is fine on a car that is already wet — you are not making it any wetter.

5. Protect the electronics

  • Open what you can — the receiver box especially — pat dry, blow out with air, and let it air dry completely before sealing it back up. Sealing moisture inside is worse than leaving it open.
  • Check connectors for water and corrosion. Green deposits or a brown, hot-looking connector needs replacing.
  • A light film of dielectric grease in every connector displaces water and stops corrosion at the contact. Worth doing before the next wet run, not just after this one.

6. Dry properly — this is where people fail

Somewhere warm, with airflow, for hours — not minutes.

⚠️ Never put a wet car straight into a sealed box, a bag or a closed cupboard. Trapped moisture with no airflow is the single worst case for corrosion, and it is the most common mistake. Body off, covers open, let air move through it.

7. Save the bearings — the real casualty

Bearings are what water actually destroys. It washes out the lubricant, then rusts the races from the inside, and rust pits are permanent.

Once the car is genuinely dry:

  • Re-oil every bearing you can reach. A drop of light oil is enough.
  • Spin each wheel and compare left to right. Gritty, rough or notchy means that bearing needs cleaning or replacing.
  • If they were under water repeatedly, plan on replacing rather than rescuing.

8. Check the diffs

Water in a sealed diff emulsifies the oil, which turns it milky. If you can see the oil and it looks like coffee with milk in it, that diff needs rebuilding — it is no longer damping anything predictably.

9. The metal

A drop of light oil on the driveline, screw heads and exposed fasteners keeps surface corrosion off. Seized screws are what turn a five-minute repair into a stripped head and a drilling job three months later.

What fails, and in what order

Useful for knowing what to expect rather than react:

  1. Bearings — first, every time, within days
  2. Connectors and solder joints — corrosion, then rising resistance, then intermittent faults that feel like a failing ESC
  3. Fasteners — surface rust, then seized screws
  4. Servo — if water got past the seal, it shows as slow or juddery centering
  5. Receiver — the least protected part, and the one that fails while you are still driving
  6. Motor — bearings first, then windings if it was salt

The battery

  • Out of the car before anything else, and checked for water in the connector.
  • Do not charge a pack that has been submerged. A pack that has been in water and shows any damage or swelling is one to retire, not to dry out.

Power off · battery out · rinse now if salt · blow the water out · wash grit off before it dries · open and dry the electronics · dry warm with airflow for hours, never sealed · re-oil bearings when genuinely dry · re-grease connectors · check the diffs for milky oil.
