The bell-shaped drum on a nitro engine that the centrifugal clutch shoes grip, with the drive gear cut into its outside.
It runs on small bearings that need regular cleaning and oiling — a seized clutch bell bearing wrecks the gear mesh and can lock the drivetrain solid.
What it actually does
On a nitro or petrol model, the clutch bell is the drum the clutch shoes grip as engine revs rise. It carries the pinion gear and is what transmits engine power into the drivetrain once the engine is above idle.
In practice
Its bearings live in a hot, dirty place and are a routine service item. Clutch engagement point is set by the shoes and springs: stiffer springs engage later, which suits a high-revving setup, while softer springs engage earlier for smoother low-speed drivability.
Worth knowing
Dry or worn clutch bell bearings are a common cause of a nitro model that will not idle without creeping. Service them at the interval rather than when they seize.
