Buying a Used RC Without Getting Burned
Check parts support before you drive across town. The ten-minute physical inspection, what the seller's answers actually mean, why you should price the deal as if the batteries are worth nothing, and the red flags worth walking away from.

A used RC can be the best value in the hobby or an expensive box of someone else's mistakes, and the difference is usually visible in ten minutes if you know where to look.
This is what to check, what to ask, what the answers actually mean, and the small number of things that should make you walk away no matter how good the price is.
Why used is worth considering at all
The electronics are most of the money. On a typical build the motor, ESC, servo and radio gear cost more than the rolling chassis. A used model that has been upgraded often carries hundreds of dollars of parts the seller will never get back.
Bashers get replaced, not worn out. A large share of used RC is sold because someone moved to a different scale, lost interest, or upgraded โ not because the model is finished.
The risk is concentrated and identifiable. Almost all of it is in three places: parts availability, the electronics, and the batteries. Get those three right and the rest is cheap.
Before you look at the model: check parts support
Do this before you drive across town, because it is the one problem you cannot fix later.
An RC with no parts support is an orphan. The first time you break an arm โ and you will break an arm โ you are looking at 3D printing, a donor model, or a shelf.
How to check, in five minutes:
- Search the exact model name plus "parts". Do the results include real, in-stock listings, or only completed auctions?
- Is the model still in production, recently discontinued, or long gone?
- Does a parts diagram / exploded view exist for it? A manufacturer that publishes one is a manufacturer still supporting it.
- Is there an active community discussing it? A model with a busy forum section has people who know where the parts are.
- Cheap unbranded models โ the ones sold under a shifting set of names โ usually have no parts at all beyond what the same seller lists. Treat them as consumable.
โ ๏ธ This is the single most common way people get burned, and it has nothing to do with the condition of the model in front of them.
The ten-minute physical inspection
Bring a flashlight. Ask permission before you take anything apart.
Chassis and structure
- Cracks, especially around the shock towers, bulkheads and suspension mounts. Look at the *edges* of holes, where cracks start.
- Bent parts โ sight down the chassis. A bent chassis plate is a hard reset on the whole car.
- Screw heads. A model with a dozen rounded screw heads has been apart many times, with the wrong tools, by someone in a hurry. That tells you more about how it was treated than anything the seller will say.
- Mismatched or missing hardware โ self-tappers where machine screws should be, one wrong-length screw, a missing e-clip. All small, all a sign.
Suspension and drivetrain
- Shocks: look for oil on the outside of the bodies. Compress each one โ they should feel smooth, equal, and identical to each other.
- Wheel play: grab each wheel and rock it. Some play is normal; a knock you can feel is a worn bearing or a worn hub.
- Spin each wheel. Grinding, roughness or noise means bearings.
- Driveline: with the model off the ground, turn a wheel by hand. It should turn the drivetrain smoothly. Clicking means a diff or a stripped gear.
- Spur gear: get the cover off if you can. Rounded or missing teeth tell you the mesh was wrong โ cheap to fix, but see the gear mesh guide before you run it.
Electronics โ where the money is
- Motor: spin it by hand. Smooth, no grinding. Look at the can for heat discoloration.
- ESC: look for melted, browned or swollen areas, and smell it. A burnt-electronics smell is unmistakable and final.
- Wiring: check for melted insulation, brittle wire, hasty repairs, and solder joints that look like gray blobs rather than shiny fillets.
- Servo: move the steering by hand with the power off โ it should feel consistent, not notchy. Powered on, it should hold position without buzzing wildly.
- Receiver: is it there, is the antenna intact, and is it the right protocol for the transmitter being sold with it? See the binding guide โ a mismatched receiver is a paperweight.
Batteries โ assume they are worth nothing
This is the safest possible assumption, and often the true one.
- Any swelling, at all, means the pack is done. Not "getting tired". Done. It is a fire risk and it must not be charged.
- Look for damaged wires, damaged connectors, dented or punctured cells.
- A seller who cannot tell you how the packs were stored has told you how they were stored.
- Price the deal as though the batteries are free, because you may well be paying to dispose of them safely. The LiPo safety guide on this site covers doing that properly.
What to ask, and what the answers mean

| "Is it bone stock or modified?" | Modified is not bad. Modified beyond the stock drivetrain's strength is. |
| "Can you send a video of it running?" | The single most useful thing you can ask for. |
| "What's included โ charger, radio, packs?" | "Everything you need" is not a list. Get the list. |
"Runs great" is not information. It is the same sentence every listing contains, including the ones that do not run at all.
Red flags
- Stock photos, or photos that do not show *this* model.
- No photo of the underside. That is where the damage is, and everyone knows it.
- It will not be powered up when you visit. There is always a reason, and it is never a good one.
- A price far below everything comparable. Occasionally a genuine clear-out. Usually not.
- Pressure to decide immediately.
- "Just needs a battery" โ sometimes true, and also what people say when they have not tested it and do not want to.
- A swollen pack included as a selling point.
Testing it, if you can
If you are allowed to power it up, do this in order:
- Transmitter on first, model second.
- Wheels off the ground. Steering left, right, center โ smooth, full travel, returns to center.
- Gentle throttle. Listen. A whine, a clatter or a grinding noise is the drivetrain talking to you.
- Let it run 30 seconds, then touch the motor and ESC. Warm is fine. Hot in 30 seconds on a stand is not.
- If you can drive it on the ground, drive it slowly in a figure of eight and listen for anything that changes with steering angle.
Working out a fair price
- Find the current new price of the same or nearest model. That is your ceiling and it is often lower than people assume โ the model may have been superseded.
- Add up the aftermarket parts at real current prices, then discount them heavily. Used aftermarket parts are worth far less than the receipts say.
- Subtract what you will replace immediately: batteries, tires, bearings, and any electronics you did not get to test.
- Subtract for missing parts support. An orphan model is worth less than a supported one in worse condition.
Buying safely
- Meet in a public place in daylight. Many police stations have designated exchange areas.
- Take someone with you if you can.
- See it working before money changes hands.
- If you are shipping, use a payment method with buyer protection, and get photos of the *actual* item with something identifying in shot.

The first thing to do after you buy it
Do not just run it.
Take an hour and go through it. Check every screw for tightness, check the gear mesh, check the diffs turn smoothly, check the shocks, re-grease what needs it, and check the electronics are mounted and sealed the way you want.
