RC Drift: RWD vs Counter-Steer, Plastic Tires, and Why the Gyro Isn't Cheating
Almost everything written about RC setup is written to maximize grip. Drift inverts it. The drivetrain choice that decides everything else, why drift tires are hard plastic, why a gyro is standard equipment rather than a crutch, and a setup table where every row does the opposite of normal.

Almost everything written about RC setup is written to maximize grip. Drift inverts it. You are deliberately building a car that will not grip at the back, and then learning to control it in that state.
That inversion matters more than it sounds, because it means much of the standard advice โ including some on this site โ points the wrong way for you. The tires guide explains how to find grip; a drifter needs to read it and then deliberately do the opposite at the rear.

The drivetrain choice comes first
Everything else follows from this, so decide it before you buy anything.
RWD โ rear wheel drive
Two driven wheels at the back, exactly like a real drift car. The front wheels only steer.
- The most realistic, and now the standard for serious drifting.
- The hardest to learn. There is no front drive to pull you out of a mistake.
- Rewards throttle control and countersteer, and punishes both when they are wrong.
- Almost always run with a gyro (see below).
CS โ counter-steer 4WD
Four-wheel drive, but geared so the front wheels turn faster than the rear. That difference is the "counter-steer ratio", commonly somewhere around 1.8 to 2.5, and it is what makes the car hold an angle: the faster front wheels drag the car forward while the rear slides.
- Much easier to drive and to hold a long, stable drift.
- Very forgiving of throttle mistakes.
- Feels less like a real car, and habits learned here do not fully transfer to RWD.
50:50 โ four-wheel drive, no ratio difference
The old-school approach. Slides, but tends to understeer into the drift and wash out. Mostly superseded; you will find it on older kits.
> Which to start on? CS 4WD is genuinely easier and will have you drifting the first evening. RWD is what the hobby has moved to and it is what most people end up wanting. If you know you want RWD, starting there is slower but not wasted time.
Tires: the part that surprises everyone
Drift tires are hard plastic. Not soft rubber โ a hard, slick plastic compound, and the whole point is that they have almost no grip.
- The common material is a hard plastic or PVC-type compound, and the hardness is the tuning variable.
- Harder = less grip = easier to break traction and hold a slide, and faster overall angle.
- Softer = more grip = more speed and more forward drive, but harder to keep sideways.
- They wear, they get flat spots, and a flat-spotted tire makes the car jitter.
The rear tires decide the character of the car far more than any suspension setting. Change one thing at a time and start with tires.
There is no shared hardness standard between brands, so โ exactly like shock oil weight โ compare within a brand and record what you ran.
Surface matters more than in any other discipline
Drift needs a smooth, hard, consistent surface: polished concrete, smooth asphalt, sealed indoor floors, or a purpose-built drift track.
- Rough asphalt eats tires and grabs unpredictably.
- Carpet has far too much grip. Carpet is for on-road racing, not drift.
- Dust and grit change the surface run to run, which is why indoor drift tracks are so popular.
If your car will not slide, before you change anything on the car, ask whether the floor is the problem.
The gyro is standard equipment
Nearly every RWD drift car runs a gyro on the steering channel. It senses the car rotating and applies countersteer faster than a human thumb can.
This is not cheating and it is not optional. A real drift driver countersteers constantly with instant feedback through the wheel and their inner ear. You are standing ten feet away with none of that. The gyro replaces the reflex you physically cannot have.
Setting it up:
- Gain too low โ the car snaps round and spins. You are doing all the correction yourself, too late.
- Gain too high โ the car feels like it is fighting you, wanders, and refuses to turn in.
- Start around the middle of the range and adjust in small steps, driving between each.
- Most gyros need a direction setting โ get it backwards and the car will spin instantly and violently. Check it on a stand before you drive.
- Many transmitters can adjust gain from a dial or switch. Worth setting up; ideal gain changes with surface.
Setup, and what each change actually does
Work in this order. Change one thing at a time.

Steering angle is the modification most drift-specific kits are built around โ extended knuckles and modified geometry allow far more lock than a normal touring car. More angle means more room to catch a slide before it becomes a spin.
Power delivery beats power
A drift car does not need to be fast. It needs to be smooth.
- A sensored brushless system is worth it here. Sensored motors give precise, smooth control at very low speed, which is exactly where drift lives. A sensorless motor can cog and stutter off the line, and a stutter mid-drift is a spin.
- A very high-KV motor makes the car harder to drive, not better. Controllability beats top speed.
- Throttle curve / expo softens the first part of the throttle travel and is genuinely useful โ there is a guide on this site about ESC programming and throttle curves.
- Drag brake โ many drifters run it very low or off. Sudden braking upsets a car that is already sideways.
Learning it, in order
- Get the car sliding at all. On a big open smooth space, accelerate and turn. If it grips and turns normally, the surface or the tires are wrong.
- Hold a circle. One continuous drift around a fixed radius. This teaches throttle modulation and countersteer more than anything else.
- Circles both directions. You will be much worse one way. That is normal and it is worth fixing early.
- Figure eight โ transitions from one direction to the other. This is where cars spin, and where the gyro gain gets properly tested.
- Follow a line โ around cones, along a wall, through a course.
- Tandem โ running with another car. This is where the discipline actually goes, and it is the reason people build these.
Spinning constantly? Usually one of: gyro gain too low, gyro direction backwards, too much throttle, or not enough steering angle to catch it.
Will not stay sideways? Usually: too much rear grip (tires too soft, surface too grippy), or too little power to keep the rear spinning.
Scale looks are part of the point
Drift is closer to scale modeling than any other RC discipline. Realistic bodies, wheel offset, ride height, working lights, interiors and wheel fitment matter to people here in a way they do not in bashing.
