Workshop Fire Safety: The Whole Room, Not Just the LiPo
The charger, the soldering iron, the aerosols and the nitro fuel are all ignition sources too. The warning signs before a battery fire, what extinguisher actually applies, where to charge, and a nine-point audit of your own bench. Sourced to NFPA, USFA and FSRI.

Most RC fire advice stops at "charge your LiPo in a bag." That is the single most important habit, and it is nowhere near the whole picture. An RC workspace usually contains a mains-powered charger running for hours, a soldering iron at 350°C, aerosol paint, solvents, and — if you run nitro — actual fuel. Any one of those can start a fire without a battery being involved at all.
This is the whole room, not just the pack.
The warning signs, first
These apply to any lithium battery, in any device, and they are worth memorising because they come before the fire. US fire-safety bodies list them consistently:
- Excessive heat — a pack or device noticeably hotter than usual, or hot when it should be idle
- Swelling or bulging
- Hissing or popping sounds
- An unusual or sharp odor
- White or gray wispy smoke — this one means immediate danger of fire, not "keep an eye on it"
If you see any of them: get people away, do not pick the pack up if it is already smoking or hissing, and call the fire service. Anything beyond mild swelling is past the point of managing yourself.
The charger is a fire risk in its own right
People treat the charger as the safe part of the setup. It is a mains-powered device converting significant wattage into heat, running unattended for hours, often on a bench covered in flammable things.
What actually goes wrong:
- Cheap or counterfeit power supplies. The charger is only as safe as what feeds it. A no-name PSU driving a good charger is still a no-name PSU.
- Blocked cooling. Most chargers vent through slots or a fan. Sitting one on a soft surface, or boxing it in on a shelf, traps its own heat.
- Damaged output leads. Charge leads get yanked, trodden on and pinched. A frayed lead at 20A is a genuine ignition source.
- Running at maximum continuously. Many chargers quote a peak wattage they cannot sustain indefinitely. Running one flat-out for hours every day shortens its life and raises its temperature.
- Wrong mode selected. Covered in the LiPo guide, but it belongs here too: the wrong chemistry or cell count is a charger-side mistake with battery-side consequences.
Do this: hard non-flammable surface, clear air all round, leads inspected before each session, and unplug the charger at the wall when you finish. NFPA guidance for battery-powered devices generally is to unplug once charging is complete rather than leaving things on charge indefinitely (NFPA).
Soldering and wiring
A soldering iron is the hottest thing in the room and the easiest to forget.
- Always use a stand, and put the iron back in it between every joint — not on the bench "just for a second."
- Switch it off at the wall. Many irons have no indicator you can see across a room.
- Solder fumes are flux smoke and should not be breathed. Ventilate, or use a small fume extractor.
- Never solder on a connected pack. Cut and solder one wire at a time when replacing a connector, never both together — bridging a battery's two leads with a hot iron is a dead short.
- Check your joints. A cold or partially-wetted joint is a resistive hot spot. Under load it heats, which raises resistance, which makes it hotter.
On wire size: undersized wire for the current is a heater. If you rewire anything, match or exceed the gauge that came off it. A wire that gets warm in normal use is a wire that is too small.
Solvents, paint and aerosols
Easy to forget because they are not electrical.
- Aerosol paint is flammable propellant in a pressurised can. Do not store it near a charger, a heater, or in direct sun in a car.
- Motor spray, brake cleaner and contact cleaner are usually flammable and their vapor is heavier than air — it collects at bench level, exactly where your soldering iron is.
- Nitro fuel contains methanol, which burns with a flame that is nearly invisible in daylight. If you run nitro, that is a specific hazard worth knowing: you can be standing next to a methanol fire and not see it.
- Rags with solvent on them should not go in a bin with anything else, and should not be left crumpled.
Ventilate whenever you spray or clean, and keep solvents and the soldering iron apart in space or in time.
Where and how to charge
Fire-safety guidance for higher-capacity batteries is to charge away from exits, so that a failure never blocks your way out, and for larger packs to charge outside where practical (NFPA).
For a normal RC setup that translates to:
- A hard, non-flammable surface — concrete, tile, or a metal tray. Not carpet, not a fabric sofa, not a wooden shelf.
- A charging bag or metal tin, used every time rather than when you remember.
- Not in a doorway or hallway you would need to escape through, and not at the bottom of the stairs.
- Not against a wall shared with a bedroom.
- Nothing flammable within arm's reach — no paper, no rags, no aerosols, no stack of spare packs beside the one on charge.
- In the room with you. Every piece of guidance agrees on this and it is the rule most often broken.
Smoke alarms
The cheapest item in this guide and the one most likely to save something.
Fire-safety bodies recommend placing smoke alarms near charging areas, positioned so airflow to the alarm is not obstructed (Siterwell summary of alarm placement guidance, NFPA).
If you charge in a garage, shed or workshop, that space needs its own alarm — a smoke alarm in the hall of the house will not help you if the garage is detached or the door is closed. Test it. An alarm with a dead battery is a decoration.
Extinguishers: what actually applies
There is a lot of confused advice here, so plainly:
- For a lithium battery fire, water is appropriate. Fire-service guidance is to use plenty of it, to cool the cells and stop the fire spreading to neighboring packs and materials. A lot of older hobby advice says never use water — that advice is wrong, and it comes from confusion with lithium *metal* fires, which are a different chemistry.
- A Class D extinguisher is not the right tool. Class D is rated for burning metals. It is not what a LiPo fire is.
- A normal ABC extinguisher is the right thing for knocking down flames spreading to surrounding materials — the bench, the shelf, the curtains.
- Sand does not put it out. It smothers surface flame while the cell keeps reacting underneath.
- A CO₂ extinguisher is good for electrical equipment such as a charger or PSU, and will not damage electronics the way powder does — but it will not cool a cell that is already in runaway.
The honest default: for anything past a single small pack, get out and call the fire service. The smoke from a lithium fire is toxic, and that is a hazard entirely separate from the flames.
Nitro-specific, if you run it
- Fuel is methanol-based — its flame can be almost invisible in daylight.
- Store fuel in its original, sealed container, cool and out of sun.
- Refuel with the engine off, outdoors, away from anything hot.
- An after-run engine is hot enough to ignite spilled fuel. Let it cool.
- Keep a fire extinguisher within reach when starting, not across the garage.
The five-minute setup audit
Walk into your space and check these. It takes five minutes and you only have to do it once properly.
- Is the charging surface non-flammable?
- Is there a working smoke alarm in this room, tested this year?
- Is the charging spot clear of the door you would leave by?
- Is there anything flammable within arm's reach of where packs charge?
- Are the charger's vents clear, on all sides?
- Does the soldering iron have a stand, and is it switched off at the wall right now?
- Are solvents and aerosols stored away from heat and away from the bench?
- Is there an extinguisher you could actually reach without crossing the fire?
- Do the people you live with know there are lithium batteries in this room?
That last one gets missed. Anyone who might have to deal with a fire in your house should know what is in there.
What we could not confirm
We are not publishing specific extinguisher sizes, alarm counts or clearance distances, because those are set by national and local fire codes that differ by country and are revised. The principles above are consistent across the sources cited; the specifics are your local fire authority's to state.
Insurance is worth a separate mention: some home policies carry conditions about charging lithium batteries, particularly unattended. We cannot tell you what yours says — but if you keep a meaningful number of packs, five minutes reading your own policy is time well spent.
