Using a Setup Sheet: The Habit That Separates Tuning From Guessing

It sounds like paperwork. It's actually the difference between tuning and guessing — the single habit that separates people who improve from people who go in circles. What goes on a sheet, the one rule that makes it work, and how to read someone else's.

A setup sheet is a record of every adjustable thing on your car and what you set it to. It sounds like paperwork. It is actually the difference between tuning and guessing, and it is the single habit that separates people who improve from people who go in circles.

Without one, every change you make erases the last, you cannot get back to a setup that worked, and you learn nothing you can repeat. With one, every run teaches you something you keep.

Why it matters more than any single adjustment

Here is the trap. You make a change, the car feels better, you make another, it feels worse, and now you have no idea which change did what or how to get back to "better". A week later the car handles badly and you cannot remember what you did.

A setup sheet solves all of that:

  • You can always get back to a setup that worked. This alone is worth it.
  • You change one thing and record it, so you actually learn what each adjustment does on *your* car.
  • You can compare a good day to a bad day and see what was different — often it was the surface or the tires, not the car.
  • You can share it, and read someone else's for the same car as a starting point.

The setup sheets on this site are built for exactly this, and a shared sheet with the *reasons* written down is worth far more to the next person than a bare list of numbers.

What actually goes on a sheet

You do not need to fill in everything. Record what you can measure and what you change. The common fields:

The basics

  • Car, class, and date. Obvious, and the first thing you forget.
  • Surface — carpet, astroturf, clay, dirt, asphalt — and whether it was wet, dusty, high or low grip. This matters more than most car settings, and a setup that was perfect on one surface can be wrong on another.
  • Tires and inserts — compound, tread, and the insert firmness. See the tires guide; the tire is the biggest single handling variable and the first thing to note.
  • Motor, ESC, gearing — pinion and spur, and the rollout if you calculate it. A gearing change is a setup change.

Suspension — the numbers that change handling

  • Ride height — front and rear, measured. The reference everything else is set from.
  • Camber — the lean of the wheels, front and rear.
  • Toe — front toe (in or out) and rear toe.
  • Springs — front and rear rate.
  • Shock oil — weight/cSt and piston, front and rear. See the shock oil guide.
  • Droop — how far the suspension drops before the shock stops it.
  • Anti-roll bars — front and rear, if fitted.

Do not be put off by the length of that list. Start by recording what you actually adjust. A sheet with tires, gearing, ride height and shock oil on it is already far better than nothing, and you add fields as you learn what they do.

The one rule that makes a setup sheet work

Change one thing at a time, and write it down before you drive.

This is the whole discipline. If you change two things and the car is better, you have learned nothing — you cannot tell which change helped, or whether they canceled out. One change, one note, one run, then read the result. It is slower for exactly one afternoon and faster forever after.

The mechanical basics have to be right *before* any of this means anything — a bent part or a badly built shock makes every number on the sheet a lie. The pre-tune mechanical check comes first, always.

Reading someone else's sheet

A shared setup is a starting point, not an answer. It was made for their surface, their tires, their driving style, and their exact car and year.

  • Match the obvious things first — tires and gearing for your surface — before copying suspension numbers.
  • Their ride height and camber assume their surface and grip. On a different track they may be wrong.
  • Driving style matters. A smooth driver and an aggressive one want different cars.

Treat a good sheet as "somewhere sensible to begin", then change one thing at a time from there and record what happens — which is the same discipline as always.

A workable routine

  1. Before a session, write down the setup you are starting with. Even if it is "stock, nothing changed" — that is your baseline.
  2. Make one change. Note it.
  3. Run a pack. Note what the car did — pushed in corners, spun on power, felt harsh, whatever it was, in your own words.
  4. Decide the next single change from what you observed, not from a list of things to try.
  5. At the end, save the sheet with the surface and conditions, so next time you start from knowledge.

Over a few sessions you build a personal library: this setup for this track, that one for the dusty park, and a record of what each adjustment actually does on your car. That library is worth more than any single fast setup, because it is yours and you understand it.

The short version

Record what you run, change one thing at a time, and note what it did. Save it with the surface and the date. Do that and you are tuning; skip it and you are guessing with extra steps.
