Your First RC Airplane: Choosing It, and Surviving Flight One
Most people who quit RC flying quit in the first month, because they bought the wrong first plane. What makes a trainer a trainer, why center of gravity ends more first flights than anything else, and the order to do things in.

Almost everyone who quits RC airplanes quits in the first month, and almost all of them quit for the same reason: they bought the wrong first plane and destroyed it on the first flight.
That is not a skill problem. It is a choice problem, and it is entirely avoidable. This covers what makes an airplane easy or hard to learn on, the two things that cause most first-flight crashes, and the order to do things in so your first plane survives long enough to teach you something.
Why airplanes are different from everything else in RC
If a car goes wrong, you let go of the throttle and it stops. An airplane cannot stop. It is going somewhere for as long as it is in the air, and the only question is whether you chose where.
Three consequences follow, and they shape everything below:
- Altitude is time. Height is the only thing that converts a mistake into a recoverable situation instead of a crash. Almost every beginner flies too low.
- Orientation flips your controls. Flying away from you, right stick banks right. Coming toward you, the plane's right is your left, and the picture reverses. This is the single hardest thing to learn and it cannot be learned by reading.
- Damage is structural. A car bounces. An airplane's wing, fuselage and tail are load-bearing, and a hard landing can end a flying session and a model in the same second.
The first plane decides whether you continue
Do not start with a warbird. Not a Spitfire, not a Mustang, not a Corsair. They are beautiful, they are what made you want to fly, and they are the worst possible thing to learn on: heavy wing loading, fast stall, short wings, no self-recovery, and a retractable-gear belly that punishes every landing.
What a trainer actually has, and why each part matters:

3-channel vs 4-channel: a 3-channel plane (rudder, elevator, throttle) turns with rudder and is genuinely easier at the very start. A 4-channel adds ailerons, which is what every plane after this one will use. Many people start on 4-channel with the ailerons available but barely used. Either is fine. Starting on something with only 2 channels teaches you almost nothing transferable.
The cheapest crash you will ever have costs nothing
Fly a simulator first. This is the highest-value advice on this page and it is routinely ignored.
A simulator teaches the one thing that cannot be taught any other way โ orientation โ and it teaches it while crashes cost nothing but a keypress. People who put a few hours into a sim before their first real flight have a dramatically different first day from people who did not.
What to practice, in this order:
- Flying away from yourself in a big lazy circle. Get comfortable.
- Turning back toward yourself and holding the plane straight as it comes at you. This is the skill.
- Figure eights in front of you, so the plane repeatedly changes from going away to coming toward.
- Landing approaches, over and over. Landing is 90% of the skill and 100% of the damage.
Several sims are free or nearly free, and even a basic one is worth more than none. You do not need photorealism; you need repetition.
Find a club and a buddy box
The second highest-value thing: fly your first flights with an experienced pilot standing next to you.
Most clubs will do this for free and enjoy doing it. Many will offer a buddy box โ two transmitters connected together, where the instructor holds control and hands it to you with a switch. The instant it goes wrong, they take it back. Your plane survives, and you learn from the recovery instead of from the wreckage.
A club also solves where to fly, what is legal locally, and who to ask when something is wrong. If there is a field near you, going once is worth more than a month of reading.
Center of gravity: the number one killer
More first flights are ended by CG than by anything else.
The center of gravity is the balance point of the plane, and every model has a recommended range printed in its manual โ usually a distance back from the leading edge of the wing.
- Nose-heavy โ the plane feels heavy, wants to descend, needs speed to fly, and lands hard. Unpleasant, but survivable and controllable.
- Tail-heavy โ the plane is twitchy in pitch, pitches up on its own, stalls without warning and can be genuinely unrecoverable. This is the one that crashes on the first flight.
โ ๏ธ If you are not sure, err nose-heavy. A slightly nose-heavy plane is a flying plane. A slightly tail-heavy plane may not come back.
Check the CG with the flight battery installed and in the position you will actually fly it, because the battery is usually the heaviest single item and moving it an inch changes everything. Support the plane at the marked balance point with a fingertip under each wing and see which way it tips.
The preflight check, every single flight
Aircraft people do this ritually, and it is why they lose fewer models.
- Battery charged, on both the transmitter and the plane.
- Correct model memory selected on the transmitter.
- Control surfaces move the correct way. Pull back on elevator โ elevator goes up. Right aileron โ right aileron goes up. Right rudder โ rudder goes right. Reversed controls are a guaranteed crash and are the most common single-flight-ending mistake after CG.
- Full travel, no binding. Every surface, both directions.
- Control horns and clevises secure. Give each linkage a firm pull.
- Prop tight, undamaged, and on the right way round.
- CG checked, with the flight battery in.
- Range check โ reduced-power mode, walk away, work the controls. The binding guide on this site covers how.
- Look at the sky and the field. Wind direction, other people, obstacles, where you would put it down.
Wind, and why your first flight is at dawn
Wind is the thing beginners underestimate most.
A light, slow trainer in gusty wind is fighting a battle it cannot win, and you will not be able to tell your own inputs from the weather. Somewhere around 10 mph is a sensible ceiling for a first flight, and calm is far better.
Early morning is usually the calmest air of the day, and empty fields are easier than busy ones. There is no prize for flying in bad conditions.
Always take off and land into the wind. Into wind means lower groundspeed for the same airspeed โ a shorter takeoff run, a slower touchdown, and much more control at both ends.
Your first flight, in order
- Take off into wind, smoothly, and climb. Get to a comfortable height โ higher than feels necessary โ before you do anything else.
- Fly big, lazy circles in front of you. Do not fly behind yourself. Do not fly directly overhead; you cannot see the plane's attitude from underneath.
- Trim it. Let go of the sticks briefly. If it drifts or climbs, adjust the trims until it flies straight and level hands-off. Now the plane is helping you.
- Practice turns in both directions, still high.
- Practice the approach at altitude โ reduce throttle, hold the nose level, get a feel for how it behaves slowly, then add power and climb away. Do this several times before you try it near the ground.
- Land into wind, with a long shallow approach and a bit of power on. Do not chop the throttle and glide steeply โ beginners flare too late and arrive fast.
- When in doubt, add throttle and climb. Height gives you time. Almost every "I panicked" story ends with someone flying into the ground while trying to fix something they had no room to fix.
When it goes wrong
- Losing orientation: let go of the sticks. A trainer with dihedral will level itself. Then work out where it is before you touch anything.
- Too low, too slow: power on, nose level. Do not pull back hard โ near a stall, pulling up is what makes it worse.
- Stall (nose drops, controls go mushy): release back pressure, let the nose down, add power. Recovery costs altitude, which is why you had altitude.
- Wind pushing it away downwind: turn back early. Do not wait โ downwind the plane covers ground fast and gets small quickly.
Where you are allowed to fly
This is not optional and it is not the same everywhere. In the United States, recreational flyers must pass TRUST, register aircraft over a certain weight, and comply with Remote ID rules; airspace restrictions apply and are enforced.

This is the honest starting point for a first powered fixed-wing model. It is not a guide to gliders, seaplanes, jets, helicopters or FPV โ those are separate disciplines with their own failure modes, and this site covers FPV quads separately.
It also cannot replace someone standing next to you at a field. Everything here is designed to get you to that point with an airplane that still flies.
