What it actually does
Sub-250g refers to aircraft whose total take-off weight is under 250 grams. Many countries set their lightest regulatory tier at that threshold, so staying under it often means fewer requirements — which is why so many small drones are designed to land just below it.
In practice
Being under the threshold rarely means no rules at all. Restrictions on flying near airports, over crowds and beyond visual line of sight typically still apply regardless of weight, and registration may still be required depending on what the aircraft is used for.
