🎥 Remote ID
A US requirement for most drones to broadcast an identification and location signal that others nearby can receive.
In the US it applies to drones that are required to be registered. Aircraft without built-in Remote ID can use an add-on broadcast module, or be flown at an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). Similar schemes exist elsewhere with different details — check your own regulator.
What it actually does
Remote ID is the requirement for a drone to broadcast identifying information — things like a serial number, position and take-off location — so it can be identified while flying. Several countries have introduced it, and it changes what equipment is legal to fly.
In practice
It is normally satisfied either by an aircraft with the capability built in, or by fitting an approved broadcast module. Requirements, exemptions and deadlines vary considerably between countries, and some categories such as flying at a recognised model flying site may be treated differently.
