What it actually does
RSSI — Received Signal Strength Indicator — is how strong the radio link looks at the model. It is the number that warns you that you are reaching the edge of your range before the link actually fails, which on a fast model or an aircraft is a warning worth having.
In practice
RSSI is usually reported through telemetry and is often shown alongside link quality, which measures how many packets are arriving intact rather than how loud the signal is. Link quality is generally the better predictor of an imminent failsafe.
Worth knowing
Set an audible alarm on RSSI or link quality rather than watching a number. If you are watching the screen you are not watching the model.
