What it actually does
A rock racer sits between a crawler and a buggy: enough clearance and articulation to climb genuine obstacles, but enough speed and suspension to be driven quickly over rough ground. It suits people who find pure crawling too slow and bashing too crude.
In practice
Typical traits are a solid rear axle, long-travel shocks, a strong protective cage and gearing that will still creep but happily runs at speed. Many are built on crawler platforms with taller gearing and stiffer suspension.
Worth knowing
The combination of speed and a high center of gravity is hard on driveshafts and steering. Rock racers reward strong steering components more than almost any other class.
