What's new: a much bigger Glossary, emails in your language, and three bugs I found and fixed

Another round of work on the site. Here's the honest rundown — the good stuff first, then the things that were broken.

The Glossary just about doubled

The [Glossary](/glossary) went from 230 terms to 447, and picked up two new sections:

  • 🪛 Tools & Workshop — hex drivers, shock pliers, ride-height gauges, camber gauges, soldering gear, the stuff on the pit table that nobody explains to you.
  • 💬 Slang & Culture — the words people actually say at the track. "Hero shot", "tank slapper", "cartwheel", "bash", "shelf queen", "sniped it".

The rest of the new terms are spread across the existing sections: more on brushless motors and ESC programming, LiPo chemistry and storage, tyre compounds and inserts, differentials, shock tuning, marine gear (flex shafts, struts, turn fins), aircraft and heli terms, and a decent chunk of FPV and drone vocabulary.

If a term you use is missing, say so in this thread and I'll add it. The Glossary is hand-written and checked — nothing goes in there that I haven't verified.

Emails now come in your language

If you registered in Spanish, German, Thai, Japanese, or any of the other 18 languages the site supports, your verification email, password-reset email and weekly digest now arrive in that language instead of English. Your language is stored on your account, so it follows you.

You can change it any time in Account Settings → 🌍 Language. Because of that, the language picker in the footer is now for guests only — logged in, it lives in your settings where it belongs.

Three things that were broken

I'd rather tell you about these than quietly fix them.

1. Portrait photos were going to end up sideways. The code that reads which way up a phone photo was taken depended on a PHP extension that isn't actually installed on this server — so it had been silently doing nothing since day one. Nobody noticed because every photo uploaded so far happens to be landscape. The first portrait shot would have been stored rotated, permanently, because the original is discarded after processing. I rewrote it to read the orientation directly out of the file instead of relying on that extension, and it now handles all eight orientations including the mirrored ones. Tested against every case.

2. Revoking a warning didn't lift the suspension it caused. If a member picked up enough warning points to be auto-suspended, and a mod later decided the warning was wrong and pulled it — the warning came off, but the suspension stayed, with no end date. The login page would tell them "temporarily suspended" while it was actually permanent. That's a bad thing to get wrong, and it's fixed: pulling or expiring the warnings that caused an auto-suspension now lifts it and tells the member. It only ever undoes suspensions the warning system itself applied — a suspension or ban placed by a mod by hand stays exactly where the mod put it.

3. The site was lying to Google. Every page view was updating the "last modified" timestamp on shops, tracks, models and parts — so the sitemap was claiming that 95% of the site had changed today, every day. Search engines quite reasonably ignore a sitemap that cries wolf, which means real updates were getting lost in the noise. Fixed at all 19 places it was happening. Timestamps are honest from here on.

Also

Shop owners who claim their listing can now drag their map pin on the manage page. Before, you could correct your street address but the pin stayed on the old building — which is what the map, the "shops near me" search and Google all actually read.

---

As always: if something looks wrong, feels slow, or just annoys you, post it. A bug someone reports takes me an hour. A bug nobody reports sits there.
