What it actually does
A range check is a deliberate test of your radio link at reduced power before you commit a model to speed or altitude. It is thirty seconds of work that finds a damaged aerial, a badly placed receiver or a failing connection while the model is still standing still.
In practice
Most transmitters have a range-check mode that drops output power so a short distance on the ground simulates full range in use. Walk away from the model while working the controls and confirm everything still responds smoothly with no glitching.
Worth knowing
Do a range check after any crash, any rebuild that moved the receiver, and on the first outing of the season. Aerial damage is invisible and this is how you find it.
