Choosing Your First RC: The Honest Guide (We Sell Nothing)
The one question that decides everything, how to spot toy-grade before you buy, what it really costs, what we would tell you NOT to buy, and buying for a child. No affiliate links, no sponsors — so this page can tell you not to buy something.

Welcome to RC. The hobby is huge, the jargon is thick, and it is very easy to spend real money on the wrong thing.
Before anything else, one thing worth saying plainly: we sell nothing and we earn nothing from what you buy. No affiliate links, no sponsored placements, no commission. That means this page can tell you not to buy something, which most buying guides structurally cannot.
The one question that decides everything
Not "what's the best RC car." There isn't one. The real question is:
Where will you actually drive it, most weeks?
Answer honestly — not where you imagine driving it once, but the place you will realistically walk to on a Tuesday evening.
- A park, field, car park, or scrubby ground → you want a basher: monster truck, stadium truck or short-course truck. Tough, high clearance, forgiving.
- A prepared track, club, or smooth asphalt → a racer: 2WD buggy or touring car. Fast, precise, rewards setup, punishes rough ground.
- Rocks, tree roots, woodland, a garden with obstacles → a crawler. Slow, technical, and the crashes are almost free because nothing is happening at speed.
- Indoors, a flat, a small yard, a desk → small scale (1/18, 1/24, or a micro crawler). Genuinely capable, and you will actually use it.
- You honestly don't know yet → get a 1/10 basher. It is the most forgiving wrong answer available, and it will teach you which of the above you actually enjoy.
Everything below follows from that answer. Get this bit right and the rest is detail.
What to buy first: RTR, and why
RTR means Ready To Run — assembled, electronics fitted, radio in the box. Add a battery and charger and drive.
A kit is a box of parts you build. It teaches you the car inside out and lets you choose every component, and it is genuinely the better long-term purchase — for your *second* car. For your first, buy RTR. You will learn more in the first month from driving, breaking and fixing than from a build, and you will learn what you actually want before you commit to component choices.
Watch for the middle terms, which is where people get caught:
- ARTR / ARR — almost ready to run. Usually no radio, sometimes no ESC. Cheaper for a reason.
- BND / BNF — "bind and drive/fly": no transmitter, and it only works if you *already own* a compatible one. This is the single most common accidental purchase in the hobby.
- RTF / PNP — mainly aircraft terms; PNP has no receiver, battery or transmitter.
If the listing says anything other than RTR, read the "what's in the box" line twice.
Hobby-grade versus toy-grade — the distinction that matters most
This is the one that decides whether your money buys a hobby or a landfill item.
Hobby-grade means it is built to be repaired. There is a parts diagram. You can order an individual A-arm. The electronics are standard components you could replace or upgrade.
Toy-grade means sealed and proprietary. When a part breaks — and something always breaks — there is no part to buy. The model is finished.
The test that sorts them in ten seconds: *can I buy a replacement front suspension arm for this specific model, today, and see the price?* If you cannot find that, it is toy-grade regardless of what the box says or what it costs. Some surprisingly expensive models fail this test.
Brushed or brushless
Brushed is cheaper, gentler, more forgiving, and easier on batteries. It is a genuinely good place to learn throttle control.
Brushless is more powerful, far more efficient, lasts much longer, and is what most modern RTRs ship with anyway.
Honest position: brushless is fine for a beginner *provided you respect it*. Many current beginner rigs are brushless and perfectly manageable. What is not fine is buying for the top-speed number on the box. A 60mph car in a park is not fun — it is thirty seconds of terror followed by a repair. Speed is the easiest thing to add later and the hardest thing to learn on.
Scale, in plain terms
Scale is the model's size relative to the real thing. 1/10 means one tenth.
- 1/10 — the mainstream. Best parts availability by a wide margin, huge model choice, tough enough for real abuse, small enough for a park. This is the default answer.
- 1/8 — bigger, faster, heavier, more expensive to run and to repair. Excellent, but not a first purchase.
- 1/16 and 1/18 — genuinely good in smaller spaces, cheaper to run, less parts choice.
- 1/24 and smaller — indoor and desk-scale. Real hobby-grade options exist, especially crawlers.
Parts availability follows popularity, not size. That matters more than it sounds on a Sunday afternoon when you have snapped something.
What it actually costs — the whole bill
The rig is not the bill. The honest list:

Where to spend and where to save. Save on the first rig — an average car you are not afraid to crash teaches you more than an expensive one you are nervous with. Do not save on the charger. A good balance charger outlives every model you own, protects packs worth more than it costs, and is the single item most likely to still be on your bench in five years.
What we would tell you not to buy
Written plainly because we have no reason not to.
- Anything you cannot buy parts for. Covered above, and it is the big one.
- A rig chosen on its top-speed claim. Those numbers are usually optimistic, usually measured on a battery configuration not supplied, and irrelevant to whether you enjoy driving it.
- A brushless "upgrade" before you have worn out what came in the box. More power into a stock drivetrain is how beginners discover which part is weakest, expensively.
- A scale trail truck if what you actually want is to jump things. They look wonderful and they are not built for it.
- A second battery before you own a good charger. More packs and a poor charger is worse than one pack and a good one.
- Metal upgrade parts, early. Plastic parts are often deliberately the sacrificial component. Replacing them with metal frequently moves the breakage to something more expensive further down the drivetrain.
- The cheapest "hobby-grade" model on a marketplace listing with no brand you recognise. Not because cheap is bad, but because parts support is what you are actually buying.
Buying for a child
A genuinely different problem, and usually answered badly.
- Speed is not the fun part. A slower model that survives being driven into a kerb repeatedly delivers far more actual play than a fast one in pieces.
- A crawler is often the best children's RC. Low speeds, low damage, and the challenge is puzzle-solving rather than reflexes.
- Waterproof matters more than power, because puddles are irresistible.
- Batteries are the real safety conversation. LiPo charging is not a child's job unsupervised. NiMH is more forgiving and is a legitimate choice for a young child's first model.
- Buy the spares at the same time. A model waiting a fortnight for a part has, from a child's point of view, been taken away.
Your first week
- Read the manual before the first run. Yes, really. It tells you the gear mesh, the tyre nut torque, and which screws are known to loosen.
- Check the wheel nuts and the gear mesh. Factory assembly is fast assembly, and these two are the most commonly left needing attention.
- Set the ESC to the right battery chemistry. An ESC left on the NiMH setting gives a LiPo no low-voltage protection at all — that is a ruined pack on run one.
- Set the failsafe so the model brakes and centres if it loses signal.
- Drive the first pack gently, then check the motor and ESC temperature by hand. Warm is fine, hot means something needs looking at now rather than in a month.
- Then go and enjoy it. Crash it. That is the point.
What breaks first
Have these on the shelf before you need them. It is the difference between a five-minute repair and a fortnight of waiting.
- Driveshafts / dogbones — the classic first failure.
- Suspension arms, front especially.
- Body clips. You will lose these in grass forever.
- A spare servo horn and the screw that holds it.
- Wheel nuts — small, and they roll away.
You will probably want a second rig within a year
Everybody does, and it is not a failure of the first purchase. It is how you discover you actually prefer crawling to bashing, or that you want to race.
What makes the first purchase *not* wasted is choosing something with real parts support and standard components. A well-supported first rig keeps its value, becomes the one you lend to a friend so they can try it, and its electronics can often move into the next build.
That is the whole strategy: buy something repairable, run it hard, and let it teach you what you actually enjoy.
What we could not confirm
We deliberately name no specific models or brands here. Availability, pricing and even quality vary by country and change from year to year, and a recommendation that is right in the US may be unbuyable in the UK or Australia. A model list would be out of date within a season and would quietly become the thing this page is trying to protect you from.
Use the tests instead — they do not expire: *can I buy the parts, is it right for where I will actually drive, and is it repairable?* Then ask people who run in your area, because local parts availability is the thing no guide can tell you.
