What it actually does
A kit arrives as a box of parts for you to build, with no electronics included. It costs more time and usually more money once you have bought a motor, ESC, servo and radio — and it is how most people who stay in the hobby end up buying models.
In practice
The reason is knowledge. Building a car teaches you where every screw goes, how the diffs come apart and what a correct gear mesh feels like, which makes every future repair faster. Kits also let you choose components to suit how you actually drive rather than accepting a factory compromise.
Worth knowing
Budget for the electronics before ordering. A kit at an attractive price plus a decent servo, ESC, motor and radio is usually well above the equivalent RTR.
