Retiring a dead, damaged or puffed LiPo pack safely instead of putting it in the household bin.
Discharge it fully using your charger\x27s discharge function on a non-flammable surface, tape or bag the connector so nothing can short, then take it to a battery recycling drop-off (Call2Recycle covers the US and Canada). Do not puncture cells, and do not rely on the old salt-water trick — it corrodes the tabs, so the pack can read 0V at the connector while the cell still holds energy.
What it actually does
Lithium packs must never go in a household bin or a general recycling bin. A damaged cell in a bin lorry or a sorting facility is a genuine fire risk, and those fires happen regularly. Disposing of packs properly takes a few minutes and matters.
In practice
Discharge the pack fully first using your charger's discharge function or a dedicated LiPo discharger. Tape over the connectors so nothing can short them. Then take it to a battery recycling point — many hobby shops, tip sites and larger retailers accept them, and battery recycling schemes exist in most countries.
Worth knowing
Do not puncture a pack to "kill" it, and do not burn it. If a pack is already puffed or damaged, keep it somewhere non-flammable and take it for recycling as it is rather than trying to discharge it first.
