The dark, polished, high-grip strip that forms on a hard-packed clay or dirt track where the cars keep running.
Grip on the groove can be excellent while the dust just off it is slick, so the track effectively narrows as the day goes on. Setup that worked in morning practice often needs revisiting by the mains.
