🚁 Headspeed

The rotational speed of the main rotor, in RPM — the single number that most defines how a helicopter feels.

Sport flying commonly sits somewhere in the 2,000 to 3,000 RPM range depending on model and blades, with 3D setups running higher. Higher headspeed gives crisper response and more authority but draws more power and stresses the blades, so stay inside the blade manufacturer\x27s limit.

What it actually does

Headspeed is how fast the main rotor turns, and it sets the character of a helicopter completely. Higher headspeed means crisper response and more authority; lower means smoother, more scale-like flight and longer flight times.

In practice

It is managed by a governor or throttle curve rather than left to vary with load. Different flying styles want different headspeeds — scale and sport flying sit lower, 3D flying much higher.

Worth knowing

Blades and heads have limits. Do not run a headspeed above what the blade manufacturer specifies, because rotor blade failure at speed is genuinely dangerous.
